The phenakisticope (better known as phenakistiscope or the later misspelling phenakistoscope) was the first widespread animation device that created a fluid illusion of motion. The phenakistiscope is regarded as one of the first forms of moving media entertainment that paved the way for the future motion picture and film industry. This toy was invented in 1832. Before this toy kaleidoscope and thaumatrope were invented, and after zoetrope and praxinoscope. (Information from Wikipedia)
To see the animation you will need a mirror. Turn the toy to a mirror with the picture side. Spin the disс and watch the animation in the mirror through the slits on the disc. The effect will be better in a bright light.
