Friesian horses get their name from their origin. First bred in Friesland, in the Netherlands, these horses resemble cart horses and Clydesdales, but are more graceful and nimble for their size. Through the Early Middle Ages and High Middle Ages, their size enabled them to carry a knight in armor. In the Late Middle Ages, a heavier, draught type of animal was is demand. Throughout history, the breed was on the verge of extinction (on more than one occasion). But now, the modern-day Friesian horses are growing in popularity and therefor in numbers. Currently, the breed is being introduced to the field of dressage.
