- Zoetrope (zoetrope) is one of several pre-film animation devices that produce the illusion of motion by displaying a sequence of drawings or photographs showing progressive phases of that motion. The zoetrope consists of a cylinder with cuts vertically in the sides. On the inner surface of the cylinder is a band with images from a set of sequenced pictures. As the cylinder spins, the user looks through the cuts at the pictures across. The scanning of the slits keeps the pictures from simply blurring together, and the user sees a rapid succession of images, producing the illusion of motion. (Information from Wikipedia)
- The phenakisticope (better known as phenakistiscope or the later misspelling phenakistoscope) was the first widespread animation device that created a fluid illusion of motion. The phenakistiscope is regarded as one of the first forms of moving media entertainment that paved the way for the future motion picture and film industry. This toy was invented in 1832. - Toupie fantoche is an invention similar to the praxinoscope. It is composed of four mirrors arranged in the shape of a pyramid as well as a disc on which the images are located. The mirrors and the disc are integral with each other and when they are rotated, the images seem to be animated. Toupie fantoche is an invention of Emile Reynaud patented in 1877. It is part of the category of optical toys. (Information from Wikipedia)
- A thaumatrope is an optical toy that was popular in the 19th century. A disk with a picture on each side is attached to two pieces of string. When the strings are twirled quickly between the fingers the two pictures appear to blend into one. (Information from Wikipedia)
